Why I Do This
I know I don't run a big webcomic. I'm working on it, trying to get up there, but I do know I'm a really small fish right now, so I hope none of this is misplaced.
People wonder what makes me take 9-18 hours a week to do a webcomic I don't even get paid for. I think the general consensus among webcomic artists is that we do it for the art. Yeah, I don't. Don't get me wrong, I have immense respect for comics. I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes as my bible. Bill Watterson made my childhood, and I don't say that lightly.
Why do I do this? I do it to make people laugh. It's just my personality. I don't do it because I love drawing, because I want people sucking my artistic dick, or because I want "dressing up like Goku and going to conventions" in my job description. I do it because when I post a comic, people laugh. That, to me, is the greatest feeling in the world. I'm not saying this so that one of you guys can email me and say "I LOVE YOU TOO, MAN." Seriously, that's cool, but I don't want to explain any more of the naked pictures to my family. I'm saying this because I mean it. Making people laugh is my goal in life. I love making people happy.
When people disrespect what makes us successful, it bothers the living shit out of me. There are artists out there, who will remain nameless, who treat their colleagues, and even worse, their fans, like absolute shit. How the fuck? These fans are paying their bills, and they're total assholes to them. I'm not saying this is true of all webcomic artists. There's a very small group of them, and I think only one is really well-known. When some high-school kid makes a short animation about Double-Oh and posts it on a forum, my first reaction won't be "I'm going to sue your ass," it's going to be "Wow, thanks man!" I..will not...name..names.
I'm not saying I don't have delusions of grandeur. I'd love to do this for a living. I'd love to go to conventions, not because I love anime (which I don't, and that needs to be said), or because I need to try new games months before they're released, it's because I'd love to meet some of you guys. Already I get emails telling me I'm doing a great job, and I appreciate that. The least I could do, if given the chance, is shake your hand.
Thanks, guys. For everything you've done so far. Hope you stay along for the ride.
